In January 2023, the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare wrote to seven state governments, from Himachal Pradesh in the far north of the country to Tamil Nadu in the far south, requesting them to start preparations for the roll-out of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for girls aged 9–14 years. The campaigns will represent the first of three phases in India’s planned introduction of the HPV vaccine. Once the notified states have covered children aged 9–14 years, HPV vaccination will become part of their routine immunisation programmes.
