December, 12, 2023 | Gynecologic Cancer, Ovarian Cancer

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The INNOVATION trial assessed patient satisfaction with participation in a prehabilitation program.
  • Patients undergoing OC surgery participated in a trimodal prehabilitation program and provided feedback via a questionnaire.
  • The study indicated that patients positively perceive the trimodal prehabilitation program, particularly the overall package and mental health intervention.

Despite advancements in ovarian cancer(OC) surgery, morbidity and recovery rates remain high. Preoperative optimization of patient health could improve outcomes, but patient compliance is crucial. For this study, researchers aimed to assess patient satisfaction with participation in a prehabilitation program.

The study introduced an innovative multimodal perioperative care approach, integrating a trimodal prehabilitation with the established ERAS pathway for ovarian cancer patients undergoing primary debulking surgery. Trimodal prehabilitation involves personalized nutrition, physical fitness, and mental health interventions guided by a thorough baseline assessment. Before surgery, patients provide feedback on their prehabilitation experience through a closed questionnaire.

The preliminary analysis included data from 131 patients. When asked about the most supportive aspect of prehabilitation, 53% cited the overall package, 36% highlighted physical activity, and 12% found the nutrition intervention most helpful. About 11% felt most supported by mental health coaching, while only 4% did not feel supported by prehabilitation.

Regarding physical capability, 40% reported feeling more capable after prehabilitation, 56% felt the same, and 4% felt less capable. Regarding mental strength, 59% reported feeling strengthened, 37% reported the same level as before, and only 3% reported feeling worse.

The study indicated that patients positively perceive the trimodal prehabilitation program, particularly the overall package and mental health intervention.
