KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of preoperative NPRI on short-term complications and long-term prognosis in laparoscopic CRC surgery.
  • The results revealed that preoperative NPRI predicts both short-term complications and long-term prognosis, improving survival nomograms.

Wenliang Jiang and the team conducted a study to evaluate the predictive value and impact on short-term complications and long-term prognosis in patients undergoing laparoscopic radical surgery for colorectal cancer (CRC).

The study examined 302 eligible patients with CRC, evaluating 5 inflammation- and nutrition-related markers alongside clinical features. The focus was on NPRI to assess its prognostic and predictive significance for perioperative risks.

The results revealed that multivariate logistic regression identified several independent risk factors for postoperative complications and survival outcomes for patients with CRC. These included a history of abdominal surgery, prolonged surgical duration, elevated CEA levels, and higher NPRI values.

Notably, preoperative NPRI showed a significant association with both common and severe postoperative complications as per the Clavien-Dindo system. Moreover, factors such as tumor diameter, differentiation status, and TNM stage also influenced overall and disease-free survival. Survival curves demonstrated superior 5-year outcomes in patients with lower NPRI levels. Integration of NPRI into nomograms for survival prediction was supported by calibration and decision curve analyses, affirming the models’ accuracy and clinical utility.

The study concluded that preoperative NPRI is an independent predictor of both short-term complications and long-term prognosis in patients undergoing laparoscopic CRC surgery. Moreover, its integration into survival nomograms improves predictive accuracy.

Funding was provided by the Jiangsu Provincial Commission of Health and Family Planning, and the Science and Technology Support Plan of Taizhou.
